“DEBATE DUEL”: A CLASSROOM GAME FOR ENHANCING ARGUMENTATIVE SPEAKING AND CRITICAL THINKING
Abstract
This article presents “Debate Duel”, an engaging and interactive classroom game designed to enhance students’ argumentative speaking skills and foster critical thinking in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. The activity promotes structured, spontaneous, and collaborative discussions through student-centered debates on diverse topics. The article provides a detailed explanation of the game’s concept, step-by-step implementation procedures, and adaptable strategies for various proficiency levels. Key stages include topic selection, preparation time, structured speaking turns, and peer evaluation. Additionally, practical tips are offered to maximize student participation and ensure balanced argumentation. The article also discusses the pedagogical benefits of Debate Duel, highlighting its impact on learners' fluency, reasoning abilities, confidence in public speaking, and ability to respond critically and coherently under time constraints. Through this dynamic approach, teachers can create a supportive environment that develops both linguistic and cognitive skills essential for academic and real-world communication.
