THE EFFECT OF MNEMONICS IN VOCABULARY RETENTION
Abstract
Vocabulary learning is one of the most challenging aspects of foreign language acquisition. Many learners struggle to remember new words for a long time, which negatively affects their speaking, reading, and writing skills. This article examines the effect of mnemonic techniques on vocabulary retention among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. Mnemonics are memory strategies that help learners store and recall information more effectively by creating associations, images, or patterns. The article discusses different types of mnemonic techniques, such as visual imagery, acronyms, and keyword methods, and explains how they support long-term memory. Based on previous studies and practical observations, the findings suggest that mnemonics significantly improve vocabulary retention and increase learners’ motivation. The article concludes that incorporating mnemonic strategies into language classrooms can make vocabulary learning more effective and enjoyable.
