INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY IN PRIMARY CLASSES
Abstract
Teaching vocabulary effectively is a cornerstone in the development of communicative competence in young learners, especially in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Vocabulary provides the necessary building blocks for expressing thoughts, understanding content, and engaging in meaningful conversations. However, traditional vocabulary instruction, often reliant on rote memorisation and repetition, tends to disengage young learners and fails to support long-term retention. This article explores a range of innovative and age-appropriate approaches for vocabulary instruction in primary classrooms. It examines the effectiveness of methods such as game-based learning, storytelling, technology integration, Total Physical Response (TPR), and project-based learning. Through theoretical insights and practical examples, the article demonstrates how these methods promote deeper engagement, meaningful practice, and improved retention of vocabulary among young learners. By embracing these innovative strategies, educators can transform vocabulary learning into a dynamic, enjoyable, and effective experience.
